The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) today reported that 16 Enforcement Orders were served on food businesses during the month of October for breaches of Irish and European food safety legislation. Eight Closure orders were issued including one for a business in Cashel at the Longfield Academy at Rockview, Deerpark road. In this case the main kitchen area used for reheating food was closed for one day from October 25 to the 26th. The inspectors found evidence of rodents and inadequate procedures to control pests. The other closures were in Wicklow, Cork and Dublin.
Four Closure Orders were served under the European Union Regulations that also included a retailer in Tipperary town. The Welcome Home retailer at 2 Kickham Place was closed from October 16th to the 22nd. Inspectors found that the premises were not kept in clean condition, there was evidence of rodents present and equipment was not properly maintained.
The other closures under this regulation were in Donegal, Dublin and Limerick. A business in limerick was issued with an improvement order and businesses in Meath, Wicklow and Kilkenny were given prohibition orders.
Dr Pamela Byrne, Chief Executive, FSAI reiterates the need for food businesses to have adequate pest control systems in place; adding that businesses must operate strict food safety procedures at all times and that they need to be especially vigilant during this particularly busy time of year leading up to Christmas.Details of the food businesses served with Enforcement Orders are published on the FSAI’s website at www.fsai.ie.
