The Government Department responsible for sourcing accommodation for migrants and asylum seekers says there is” no offer of accommodation” being considered in respect of the old ballroom that was formerly part of the Times hotel in Tipperary Town.

The property is now owned by the owner of the adjacent building and was granted a Section 5 Declaration by Tipperary County Council in August of this year that were it to be modified to provide accommodation for asylum seekers or refugees such work would not require planning permission. The owner says the project has been abandoned and the Department’s Community Engagement Team issued written confirmation to Sinn Fein Cllr Anne Marie Ryan that there is no offer of the building for accommodation and that the Department is not examining the building for such potential use.

Rural Independent TD Mattie McGrath has received confirmation from the Department that Kilcoran Lodge Hotel has been offered as a potential Accommodation Centre by the team of Receivers currently managing the hotel. The Department is currently assessing the suitability of the hotel  for such purposes at present. The hotel has 22 bedrooms and continues  to trade with 15 staff employed in the hotel and  6 staff  employed in the leisure Centre.
