Conor Sweeney has announced his retirement from intercountry football.
The Ballyporeen clubman played senior football with Tipperary for 15 seasons, captaining the team to the famous 2020 Munster final victory over Cork – bridging a gap back to the previous Munster title in 1935. The Tipperary team had a run to the All Ireland Football Semi-final in 2016 losing out to Mayo. Conor Sweeney won a Munster U-21 football championship in 2010, an Allianz Football League Division 4 title in 2014 and a Division 3 League title in 2017. As free taker he delivered many vital scores for this teams – club and county.
Mr Sweeney is a teacher in the Abbey school in Tipperary town. The 34-year-old star also earned an All-Star award in 2020, joining Michael Quinlivan and Declan Browne as the only footballers from Tipperary to ever win an All-Star.
Mr Sweeney is thanking everyone that assisted with his career including his teammates, coaches, the Friends of Tipperary Supporters Club and his family including his parents, siblings and wife Shauna. In particular he thanks former Tipperary manager, the late Liam Kearns and the late Pat O’Callaghan who managed the grounds at Coolmore Dr Morris Park for their support during his career.
