Roscrea based councillor Michael Smith is to contest the Fianna Fáil selection convention for the party nomination for the upcoming General Election.
Cllr Smith has been a councillor for 20 years and is the son of former Government Minister Michael Smith who served almost 30 years as TD and Senator.
The Fianna Fáil Party was shocked by the news last week that sitting TD Jackie Cahill would not be standing in the election due to ill health. Cllr Smith says he has a proven track record of hard work, dedication and commitment to the people.
Cllr Ryan O’Meara based in Cloughjordan is also seeking the party nomination for the election and there may be other challengers before the Convention is held this weekend with the General Election likely on November 29th. North Tipperary which now includes 13 Local Electoral Areas from North West Kilkenny is considered highly likely to return a Fianna Fáil TD alongside sitting TDs Regional Independent Michael Lowry and Labour’s Alan Kelly.
