Decision On New Eligibility Policy For Burial In St Cormac Cemetery Deferred

A decision on a new eligibility policy for burial in St Cormac Cemetery in Cashel was deferred at yesterday’s meeting of the Tipperary Cahir Cashel Municipal District Council.

Independent councillor Liam Browne had put forward a motion seeking to put a new policy in place that would give consideration to existing family ties to Cashel and  the proximity of the deceased person’s residence as criteria to be able to secure a burial plot in the cemetery. The councillor’s proposal was that a distance of 20km from the town be the boundary as regards the distance criteria. Cllr Browne had proposed that exceptions be made in cases where the council might be burying a person of unknown identity.  Tipperary County Council is seeking a new location for an additional burial ground in the town.

The meeting agreed to defer the motion to a date no later than January 2025 in light of ongoing discussions regarding a suitable new location.
