Tipperary Sinn Féin TD Martin Browne has raised the upkeep of the Rock of Cashel in the Dáil, calling for Office of Public Works to get its priorities right.
The Cashel-based TD says he made the call after the growth of foliage and weeds on the structure was commented on by locals and visitors to the site.
“The growth of these weeds and moss is continuing to spread across the structure and will continue to do so unless the matter is attended to swiftly.”
Deputy Browne raised the issue with Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform, Pascal Donohue in the Dáil yesterday and has also written to the OPW advising them of his concerns.
“It is time for the OPW to get its priorities right and deal with iconic structures such as the Rock of Cashel that attract hundreds of thousands of visitors to the area each year – over 357,000 in 2023 – according to Deputy Browne.
The Cashel based TD also highlights the expenditure on Bike Sheds and Security Huts at Leinster House as examples of wasteful expenditure by the OPW.
Deputy Browne says “Public money should be directed towards projects that benefit communities.”“
“Given that the habit has been to do otherwise, then it is time that this government call it quits, call an election, and give the people the opportunity to vote for the change that is well overdue.”
