Protest To Be Held Over Possible Loss Of Hedgerows On Clonmel Farm Today

Hedgerows Ireland, a group founded in County Tipperary is to hold a “peaceful protest” today (Thursday, October 3) at a farm at Parkville, just outside Clonmel on the Fethard road.

The group are concerned about the possible loss of hedgerows and traditional buildings on the farm which was recently purchased by Coolmore Stud.

Tipperary County council has now received an application from Coolmore for permission to demolish the farm buildings on the site.

Hedgerows Ireland is also calling on the new owner to undertake to retain hedgerows, a lime kiln, a walled garden, trees, and a duck pond on the 65 acre property.

The group – which is a non-government organisation (NGO) advocating for hedgerows and better hedgerow management, says correspondence sent to John Magnier, the new owner, has not been met with any response.

The farm had been leased to dairy farmer John Hurley and his family for around 50 years.

Mr Hurley was outbid by Coolmore who have a policy of removing internal hedgerows from newly acquired farms to create larger fields of up to 100 acres for the more efficient use of equipment and greater crop yields.

The farm Eircode is E91 N562.
