SIPTU members employed in the Citizens Information Service have voted overwhelmingly in favour of strike action in a dispute over pay.
Approximately 300 staff are involved working in 50 Citizens Information Centres across the country.
SIPTU Deputy General Secretary, John King, says “Members were left with no alternative but to ballot for strike action in furtherance of their pay dispute due to a failure by the employer and the Department of Social Protection to respect a Labour Court recommendation on a pay increase for staff.
The strike will occur during what should be a busy period for the service as it advises people concerning the impact of Budget 2025 on their finances.
Unless there is a last minute intervention the strike will begin on October 7th. The union says the industrial action will be indefinite in duration and result in the full closure of this vital service until action is taken to respect the Labour Court recommendation issued in June of this year.
There are five Citizens Information centres in county Tipperary – Tipperary town, Thurles, Nenagh, Roscrea, and Clonmel.
Tipperary TD Michael Lowry is calling on the Government to implement the Labour Court Recommendation adding that the service is used by some of the most vulnerable people in society who have trust, faith and confidence in Citizens Information Service to support them.
