Tipperary Town To Host Rally Renewing Calls For A Ceasefire In Gaza

Tipperary town is to host a rally on Saturday in support of renewed calls for a ceasefire in Gaza. The event is being organised by the South East Branch of the Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign and will take place in the Market Yard at 2pm.

The Chairman of the Group, Dean McGrath says the escalation in violence in the West Bank and the dire conditions in Gaza make a ceasefire essential.

The event comes as Senator Frances Black today published legal advice that Ireland is fully entitled to pass the Occupied Territories Bill and ban all trade with illegal Israeli settlements despite existing advice from the Attorney General.

Christian Aid Ireland, Trocaire and the Social Democrats are part of a new campaign launched today to campaign for the full enactment of the legislation.

The legal advice from Takis Tridimas, a former EU commission advisor, and  Panos Koutrakos, editor of the European Law Review,  argues that Ireland is able to pass the Occupied Territories Bill and adds that given the advisory judgment issued by the International Court of Justice Ireland is obliged to take action to sanction Israel.

Senator Frances Black, who first tabled the Occupied Territories Bill in 2018 describes the ongoing situation in Palestine as having “rapidly deteriorated” since then.
