Deputy Mattie McGrath Calls For The Withdrawal Of “Health & Wellbeing” Textbook

The Leader of the Rural Independent Dáil Group,  Deputy Mattie McGrath, is calling on the National Council for Curriculum Assessment and the Minister for Education, Norma Foley, to withdraw a textbook, “Health and Wellbeing”, published by Edco. This textbook is intended for first-year secondary school students aged 12-13.

The Tipperary TD says the content perpetuates harmful stereotypes and fails to provide a balanced and respectful representation of Irish culture.

Deputy McGrath wants a thorough investigation into how it was approved for classroom use and says Edco, and the Minister for Education, must issue an apology.

The TD is particularly incensed by the book’s portrayal of people attending the Fleadh Cheoil saying it describes such people as “bigots, which is appalling and unacceptable.”
