Tipperary town Tidy Towns Group is to seek a meeting with the Tipperary Municipal District Council management about how the Tipperary Hills park and the River Arra Walkway can be maintained in the future. Chairperson Paul O’Callaghan says that the voluntary group cannot manage everything in the longer term and that volunteers feel “exhausted and abused.” The Group has 8 TUS workers who all contribute a number of hours per week.
Mr O’Callaghan is encouraging people who want the amenities to be well maintained to get involved in the work rather than making criticisms on social media about overgrown areas of town.
The Council created the River Arra Walkway and playground in December 2022 and completed an upgrade of the Tipperary Hills area last year. The Council are also due to seek planning permission later this year for an upgrade of The Plan area (Redmond Square) – a third public park in Tipperary town located adjacent to Davitt Street later this year.
Mr O’Callaghan says the group enjoy a good working relationship with the Town Foreman Francis Fitzgerald however more personnel are required to weed flower beds, cut grass, tidy pathways and remove litter in addition to other possible projects including river maintenance and tree planting.
Mr O’Callaghan is also calling for the picnic table that was removed from the Kickham Place area, which he described as “theft”, to be relocated near the playground on the River Arra Walkway. It is understood that the seats( a picnic table and 3 garden benches) have now been returned to the Council and local Councillors will decide if they are returned to Kickham Place or relocated elsewhere in town.
