The Taoiseach Simon Harris and the Justice Minister Helen McEntee are to visit Clonmel today.

It is understood that the trip includes a visit to the site of the planned new Clonmel Garda Station which will be built at Kickham Plaza.

The station project has been delayed for years as it was initially part of a larger project involving Mallow Garda station and a new Children’s Court building in Dublin.

Due to delays with the Children’s Court Building the Government decided to split the project into three separate projects to enable progress with the two Garda Stations which will now progress as two separate projects.

The new building in Clonmel will provide local policing services and be the Garda Community Engagement Headquarters for the Tipperary South Area.

Mr Harris, who failed recently to meet with three Fine Gael Cathaoirligh from South Tipperary as they requested to discuss immigration and the creation of an IPAS centre in Dundrum, is also expected to open a new office for one of Cathaoirleach – Cllr Michael Murphy the current Mayor of Clonmel.

Cllr Murphy was selected by Fine Gael last April to run in the general election instead of Senator Garret Ahearn who was one of two Fine Gael Candidates at the last General Election alongside Mary Newman.

It is now expected that the General election will be held in early November
