Labour’s Cllr Brennan To Contest General Election

214

Cllr Michael Brennan (Carrick-on-Suir MD) is to run for Labour in the upcoming General Election in South Tipperary. Mr Brennan is the nephew of former councillor Ned Brennan who served as councillor in south Tipperary for over 30 years.  Michael Brennan is based in Killenaule and says the East of Tipperary can do better with representation in the Dáil. In the recent local elections Cllr Brennan was one of three Labour councillors elected in Tipperary, alongside Louise Morgan Walsh in Nenagh – both elected for the first time and long standing Newport Councillor Fiona Bonfield. The party has one TD in the county – Nenagh based Alan Kelly. Labour Party Leader Ivana Bacik is to visit Killenaule to launch the Councillor’s campaign in the coming weeks.

The general election is likely to be held in November after the October 1st Budget is approved by the Dáil.  South Tipperary will elect 3 TDs and be a separate constituency from North Tipperary which will also elect 3 TDs – the county is to have a total of 6 TDs due to population increase.

Sitting Independent TD Mattie McGrath is expected to stand in the General Election – Sinn Fein have selected sitting TD Martin Browne while Fine Gael have selected Cllr Michael Murphy. Fianna Fáil have yet to select their candidate with Cllr Imelda Goldsboro previously expressing an interest in being the candidate. Other political parties may also put forward candidates and it is also expected that some of the recently elected Independent Councillors in South Tipperary may contest the Dáil Election.
