This group of students did not sit the Group Certificate as it was cancelled due to the pandemic restrictions. The Department of Education says results have been artificially boosted by an average of 7.5% to ensure that the 2024 results are on a par with previous years when calculated grades were awarded by class teachers. The State Examinations Commission says this year’s results are at the same level in the aggregate as last year’s and there has been no grade inflation.

The national mental health charity Turn2Me is reminding families across the country that exam results don’t define a person. Turn2Me says that the pressure to perform well and the fear of disappointing their parents or getting less points than their peers can take a significant toll on mental health. The Charity is also reminding students and parents that there are many alternative pathways for different careers.

Turn2Me offers free online counselling sessions and peer support groups. The charity is encouraging students to reach out if they need someone to talk to or if they’re feeling overwhelmed.

Students and their families can avail of Turn2Me’s free mental health services by visiting the charity’s website at www.turn2me.ie.
