Ireland’s women’s team in the 4 x 400 relay event has qualified for the Final in their Olympic event after finishing third in their heat to secure one of the automatic qualifying places.
Tipperary’s Sharlene Mawdsley ran the final leg in a time of 49.65 seconds to secure third and an automatic qualifying spot.
The Irish team featured Sophie Becker in the lead off, handing off to Phil Healy, Kelly McGrory taking the third leg with Newport woman Sharlene Mawdsley receiving the baton for the final leg in fourth place.
The Tipperary athlete timed her run to perfection and overtook the Canadian runner in the final 50m to secure qualification for the Olympic final which will take place tomorrow night.
The Irish team may be strengthened for the final by the addition of Rhasidat Adeleke who runs in the 400m individual event at 7pm this evening.
Mark English has just completed his semi-final run the 800 m finishing in 7th place meaning he does not progress to the final.
Limerick’s Sarah Lavin finished sixth in her 100m hurdles semi-final and will not reach the final.Arrangements are being made in Clonmel for a special homecoming event for local man Daire Lynch who won a bronze medal with Philip Doyle in the double skulls rowing event at the Olympics.
The homecoming event will take place on Wednesday August 14th at the Kickham Plaza in Clonmel at 6pm.
