Team Ireland’s Medal Hopes Continue As Olympic Games Advance

Team Ireland will be hoping to secure further medals as the Olympics continues in Paris.

Tipperary Athlete Sharlene Mawdsley and team mate Sophie Becker will run at approximately 10.20am in the repechage of the 400M event  – both will hope to progress and join Ireland’s Rhasidat Adeleke  in tomorrow’s semi finals.

There is heartbreak for European Champion Ciara Mageean as injury has forced her to withdraw from today’s heats of the 1500 metres. Sarah Healy and Sophie O’Sullivan will take part in today’s heats shortly after 9am.  Irish Showjumpers Shane Sweetnam and Daniel Coyle will compete in their final beginning shortly after 9am – the pair will be amongst the last to compete leaving them in a position to know the target to beat to win a medal.

The Final of the Women’s 60Kg Boxing event will take place at the famed Roland Garros Tennis Stadium this evening – Ireland’s Kellie Harrington, the reigning Olympic Champion, will seek to secure gold with a win but is guaranteed a silver medal. The contest will begin at 10.06pm.
