Clanwilliam Rugby Club is to hold a “Welcome Home Reception” for Amee-Leigh Murphy Crowe in the clubhouse in Tipperary town at 4pm tomorrow.
The club is calling on the local community to attend to show appreciation and pride for the contribution Amee-Leigh has given to the Irish Women’s 7s Rugby team. Amee- Leigh, who began playing rugby with Clanwilliam, captained the Irish team for 4 of their 6 matches and scored 3 tries over the course of the Olympic tournament where Ireland ranked 8th on their first ever appearance at the Olympic event.
Amee Leigh has described playing for Ireland in the Olympics as a huge honour but also to be representing Irish Women at the highest level as a source of great satisfaction.
Amee Leigh is now a member of Railway Union RFC and etched her name in the history books when she scored the first ever Irish try in the Women’s Sevens at the Paris Olympics. In 2014 the former St Anne’s Secondary School student made her Rugby 7s debut and the team has enjoyed success in the World Rugby Sevens series finishing in third place in 2022 and winning the Series in Australia earlier this year. Amee was the leading try scorer at the 2018-2019 World Rugby Women’s Sevens Series, becoming the first woman not from Australia or New Zealand to achieve the feat. Ms Murphy Crowe, aged 29 and a native of Lattin also holds the record as Ireland’s leading try scorer. Amee plays on either wing making her a difficult opponent to defend against and credits her speed when running to her formative athletic training at Tipperary Athletic Club at the Canon Hayes Recreation Centre and coach Breda Christie.
Clanwilliam Rugby Football Club, founded in 1879, says all are welcome to attend the Homecoming event on Saturday at 4pm.
