The organisers of the Paris Olympics yesterday issued an apology for a portion of the Opening Ceremony on Friday night that appeared to mock the Last Supper. The Catholic Church of France expressed its disapproval, stating on its X account: “Unfortunately, this ceremony contained scenes that mocked Christianity, which we deeply regret.” A spokesperson for Paris 2024 speaking at a press conference yesterday “says there was never any intention to show disrespect to any religious group. On the contrary, we intended to show tolerance and community. If people have taken any offence, then we are sorry.”

The highpoint of the 4 hours opening ceremony for many was the performance of Celine Dion who has not performed in public for over 4 years due to a progressive illness.
