The tender for the construction of a new Garda station in Clonmel has been issued. The works involve the construction of a new Garda Community Engagement Headquarters for the Tipperary South Area in Clonmel.  The completed project will face onto a new public plaza that is part of the proposed Kickham barrack masterplan. The development consists of a  new 3,630sq m Garda Community Engagement Headquarters  building on a site of circa. 0.46 hectares comprising a two, three and four storey building with a separate single-storey ancillary building to the rear.  The accommodation of the main building includes offices, conference facilities, staff support facilities, custody areas, plant and associated ancillary spaces

The project was agreed over 9 years ago and initially was part of a public private partnership that also included the construction of a Garda station in Cork and a new Children’s Court Building in Dublin. Delays in approving the design for the Court building delayed the overall project and last year the governed agreed to separate the projects to allow the Clonmel Garda station to proceed.

It is expected that construction works can commence this year. The current Garda station on Emmet Street in Clonmel is generally accepted as no longer being fit for purpose.
