Council Reveals Details Of Plans To Upgrade West End of Liberty Square

Tipperary County Council have released details of the plans to upgrade the West End of Liberty Square in Thurles.

The project is technically difficult due to the heavy traffic that flows through the Square which is a meeting point for the N75 and the N62.

The public can view the plans at the Council office or online on the Council website under the consultations tab at this link here.

The closing date for submissions  is August 16th and as this is a Part 8 planning application there is no charge to make a submission.

The proposals include a number of raised pedestrian crossings alongside uncontrolled crossings and some controlled pedestrian crossings to link the north and south of the Square with a parking island in the centre.

The proposal will reduce the number of parking spaces in the parking island by 12 spaces and other adjustments to parking are being made to provide a disabled parking bay and a formalised bus stop.

The project area will also take in parts of Westgate, Friar Street, Parnell Street, Cuchulainn Road and O’Donovan Rossa Street.

Consideration is being given to preventing HGVs from making a right turn onto Cuchulainn Road and possibly making this road a one way system for traffic travelling east towards O’Donovan Rossa Street.

A raised Zebra crossing is proposed for the vicinity of St Ailbe’s national School. The road surfaces in the project area will be renewed and overhead wires will be undergrounded where possible.

The project is phase two of the Liberty Square upgrade and follows the work done in the East end of the Square in recent years.

Councillors in Thurles were informed this week that Transport Infrastructure Ireland(TII) cannot fund works on Slievenamon Road and Kickham Street(Dublin Road) despite the council approving designs and planning permissions last year.

No date for the commencement of the two road upgrades has been indicated by TII.
