The Roads and Transportation section of Tipperary County Council is offering reassurance in the short term as regards access to the council operated carpark at the former Munster Hotel complex in Thurles. The building has been vacant and idle for almost 20 years and although the owner did secure planning permission for construction works in 2022 none have commenced.
The Council says that a lease agreement is in place for the carpark until the end of October 2024, the date set by the property owner. The council says it is open to extending the lease – the car park is used by both cars and school buses and is situated close to the Cathedral. The council is to close the other car park in the area on August 6th until late 2025 for construction works at the Thurles Town Park car park in respect of the planned Thurles Market Quarter venue. The Council is also examining the costs involved in bringing the car park under the Source Arts Centre back into use. The car park has been the location of antisocial behavior in recent years culminating in a fire in 2023 that caused significant damage and the closure of the car park.
