Proposals for a residential development and crèche in Thurles have been rejected by Tipperary County Council. The proposal sought permission for the construction of 86 residential units on land at Hayfield Manor on the west side of the Bohernamona road.

The council had considered the proposal and after receiving the further information it requested from the applicant, Sinead Maher, the Planning authority has refused permission.

The Council says the proposed development is contrary to the zoning objectives of the Thurles and Environs Local Area Plan 2024 as they relate to the site and is contrary to the proper planning and sustainable development of the area. The council also expressed concerns about the adequacy of the storm sewer through which surface waters from the development will drain, the absence of an appropriate assessment of the impact of such works on ecology and the Lower River Suir Special Area of Conservation. There were two submissions on the planing application one of which raised serious concerns about possible flooding for adjacent properties especially those close to the river Suir due to run off from the proposed development, higher than normal rainfall in recent years and the downstream impacts of the recent Templemore Flood Relief works on the River Suir. The second submission on behalf of Deancastle Developments sought to have co-ordinated approach to the creation of a link to the waste treatment pipe on the Mill road as the Deancastle proposed development is for 179 houses on the east side of the Bohernamona road.
