Uisce Eireann reports that 1 million litres of water has been saved in Tipperary every day following the detection of 31 major leaks across the county so far this year. The daily water savings would meet the daily demand of over 7,500 people.
Dave Murphy Leakage Reduction Programme Manager with Uisce Éireann says “that water is a valuable resource and expensive to produce so finding these leaks and successfully repairing them will help secure a more reliable supply for the local communities.”
Uisce Éireann and Tipperary County Council used specialised detection equipment called Acoustic Noise Loggers to identify the exact locations of the water loss on the underground public network. Uisce Éireann is working towards a 2030 goal of a national leakage rate of 25% down from the higher level of 46% as recorded in 2018.
Since 2018, Uisce Éireann has invested more than €500 million to upgrade the underground water network across the country and will invest a further €250 million every year up to the end of 2030. Critics of the company say the rate of pipe replacement is too slow and opponents of the Shannon Pipeline cite the high rate of leaks in Dublin, measured at over 40% as a strong reason to oppose the pipeline project which is intended to extract and treat water from the Shannon and distribute it in the Dublin area and the wider Eastern Region.
