Concern Worldwide Searching For Volunteers For Judging Concern Debates Contest

Irish humanitarian organisation Concern Worldwide is looking for volunteers in Tipperary to become judges at debating contests about global issues for their local schools.

The charity runs an all-island contest called Concern Debates, which was founded in 1984 to encourage further debate about global issues among young people.  Hundreds of schools participate each year both in primary and secondary levels debating issues like climate change and poverty and this year it saw the Ursuline Secondary School in Thurles make it to the final.

Concern has launched a campaign to attract people with an interest in global issues to apply to become the adjudicators who judge each showdown between school debating teams. They will be at the Thurles Shopping Centre on Friday July 19 where people can discuss the volunteer roles in person with the competition’s organisers.

It might suit teachers, retired people, third level students, people in part time or full time work or anyone with an interest in debating and helping young people to develop new skills. These debates give young people who participate so much confidence and skills such as public speaking, evidence based research and how to argue respectfully about any issue.

Anyone who would like their school to take part in the competition or who would like to volunteer is asked to ring 01 417 7742 or email [email protected].
