2328

Limerick’s bid to win the elusive 5th consecutive All Ireland title has ended following a 2 point defeat to Cork yesterday in the All-Ireland Hurling Semi-final.  The final score was Cork 1 – 28   Limerick. 29 points

Cork will now take on Clare in an all Munster Final after the Banner men defeated Kilkenny in Saturday’s semi-final.  The All Ireland Hurling final is set for July21st.

Limerick did make history in winning 6 consecutive Munster titles in total with this squad led by John Kiely and a magnificent 5 All Irelands during the last 6 years. Limerick now have a total of 12 titles – the 5 won by this squad and 7 won over the years between 1897 and 1973. Limerick’s win in 2018 ended a barren spell of 45 years without a title.

Cork and Limerick fans applauded the Limerick team after the game in Croke Park in recognition of their achievements. The Limerick squad is quite young with only five of the 19 players taking part yesterday older than 30 – only Nicky Quaid is over 31. Focus will now turn to the future of John Kiely and if he will continue for a 9th season as per his last contract extension.
