Nenagh MD today elected Labour Cllr Fiona Bonfield from Newport as Chair of the Nenagh Municipal District for the next 12 months. Independent Cllr Seamie Morris will serve as Leas-Cathaoirleach. Cllr Bonfield is one of 3 Labour councillors elected in Tipperary following the June 7th Local elections. Community Development and Garda enforcement on speeding issues are amongst her priorities. Cllr Bonfield has been a councillor since 2014 while Louise Morgan Walsh and Michael Brennan were elected for the first time this year in the Nenagh and Carrick on Suir Municipal Districts respectively.
All five Municipal Districts in Tipperary have now appointed their cathaoirligh for the coming 12-month period. Cllr Michael Smith Fianna Fáil is the chair of the Thurles Templemore MD, Cllr Michael Murphy Fine Gael is thenew Mayor of Clonmel Borough. Cllr Murphy is to be the Fine Gael candidate for South Tipperary in the next General Election which is expected before Christmas. In the Tipperary Cahir Cashel MD Cllr John Crosse Fine Gael, is in the chair as is his party colleague Mark Fitzgerald in Carrick on Suir MD.
Cashel based Fine Gael Cllr Declan Burgess was elected Cathaoirleach of the Tipperary County Council following a pact between FG/FF and Labour who control 23 of the 40 seats. The group will appoint the Cathaoirleach and Leas Cathaoirleach for each of the 5 years of the council term.
