The Rural Independent group of TDs are seeking a referendum vote on the EU Migration Pact vote.
The Government changed it’s plan to hold a Dáil vote on the Pact this week claiming more Government TDs wanted to speak in the Dáil. The vote is now to be held next week – the Dáil is due to begin the Summer Recess on July 11th. The Government is opting in to 7 of 10 sets of EU regulations but is proposing one single vote – opposition TDs are calling for a vote on each set of regulations. There are also two challenges before the High Court seeking orders to have a Referendum on the EU Migration Pact.
Deputy Mattie McGrath, says the pact has no opt-out once Ireland commits unless Ireland decides to leave the EU entirely. The Tipperary TD says such a commitment is outright recklessness, especially with the government forcing the pact opt-in.
The TD rejects the Government’s plan to process applicants for asylum in a shorter time frame given the increase in numbers arriving – possibly up to 30,000 annually in future years.
