The Office of Public Works(OPW) are seeking planning permission for the change of use from the existing Medical Centre located on the Kiln in Cashel to offices and related facilities for the use of staff associated with the upkeep and interpretation of the Rock of Cashel.
The staff presently use buildings located on the Rock of Cashel.
The OPW is of the view that the Healthcare Centre building at the Kiln, Cashel, is ideally located to meet the needs of the OPW.
It is located within a short walk and is connected via a ramp to the Rock of Cashel carpark.
The property will not house any front of house public functions and will be used as an operation base for staff, the majority of whom will spend their working day in the grounds of the Rock of Cashel.
19 guides work at the Rock during the off season and this increases to 35 in the summer peak tourism months. Over 380,000 paying customers visited the Rock of Cashel in 2023.
The planning application is open for submissions until 28th of March and a decision is due on April 18th.
Work is also ongoing in Cashel to obtain a suitable location for a Visitor Centre in the town that would bring greater footfall to the town from the Rock of Cashel.
This work is being undertaken by a working group involving the OPW, Tipperary county Council and Fáilte Ireland.
