A decision on planning permission for an All-Weather Horse Race Track integrated around the existing turf track at Tipperary Racecourse is now overdue – it was expected from An Bord Pleanála on January 23rd.
There is some local speculation that approval for construction has been granted – this is yet to be confirmed.
Tipperary County Council approved the planning application in August 2022 and this grant of planning permission was subsequently appealed in September 2022.
The project is supported by Tipperary County Council, Tipperary Tourism and Fáilte Ireland. An all-weather racecourse at Tipperary Racecourse would be the second such facility in Ireland located in the heart of the racing industry. The only other such facility is in Dundalk.
If permission is granted, it is thought that the number of race meetings at Tipperary Racecourse will increase with all year round racing and horse schooling an additional revenue stream. At present the track at Limerick Junction, just outside Tipperary town, is used for race meetings between April and October.
