This week sees the start of the long awaited €15M Rural Regeneration Fund Project for Cahir town which will ultimately revamp the town centre, provide a new car park, business centre and state of the art public library.
The contracts for the new car park involving demolition and enabling works on the Cashel road will be signed on Thursday January 25th with the contract awarded to Civil Engineering Contractors Tony Kirwan, Kilmacthomas, county Waterford. Works on the ground are due to commence on Thursday 1st February and these works are not expected to have any impact on traffic in Cahir.
This phase will enable Tipperary Council to go to tender for the car park resurfacing. It is hoped that the car park will be in operation this Summer. Cllr Andy Moloney says Cahir has become a destination town and car parking has been at a premium over the Christmas period, at weekends and especially during the Summer. The car park will accommodate over 80 cars, 5 bus bays as well as disability and EV charging facilities.
Cllr Andy Moloney is welcoming the car park commencement as a vital piece of infrastructure in the plan to improve Cahir as the district town and to enable the greater circulation of visitors that arrive to visit The Castle, River Walk and the Swiss Cottage. To date the Department has only authorised this portion to commence – the entire project has secured planning permission.
