Tipperary TD Jackie Cahill and party colleague Roscrea Councillor Michael Smith are to meet with Minister Roderick O’Gorman today with a view to presenting the case for additional resources for Roscrea town.

The meeting comes after 17 asylum seekers arrived in Rackett Hall Hotel yesterday. The Hotel owners signed a contract for 160 asylum seekers to be accommodated in the building for at least a year.

Fianna Fail’s Deputy Cahill has suggested that additional funding be allocated to groups in Roscrea  to support integration and that if possible an investor be sought that might renovate the vacant Grants hotel in the town centre.

In addition the TD says GP and education places must also be resourced. The Thurles based TD says people have the right to protest but asks that these be peaceful at all times.

In related news Comedian Pat Shortt has posted on his social media account that his show in Rackett Hall scheduled for  February 9th is cancelled due to the decision by Hotel owners to end all public access to the hotel – “We are very sorry to announce that our concert at The Racket Hall Roscrea on Friday the 9th of February 2024 has had to be cancelled due to the closure of the hotel.”
