Rural Independent Group Raises Concern Over Proposed Structure Of Covid Inquiry

The Rural Independent group of TDs are expressing concerns about the structure of a proposed Covid Inquiry.

The group is accusing the government of attempting to strategically design the inquiry in such a way as to shield political interests.

Deputy Mattie  McGrath wants the inquiry to be fully transparent in examining the efficacy of public health measures in Ireland during the pandemic and highlighting global disparities in approach.

The extended closures of schools, churches, and businesses together with cancelled health appointments and restrictive movements warrant a comprehensive investigation according to the Tipperary Independent TD.

Deputy McGrath  is highlighting that the harsh pandemic restrictions were often justified by the precautionary principle, which advised against acting until sufficient evidence was available.

However, no evidence exists suggesting that the government’s drastic measures were necessary according to Deputy McGrath.

The TD also wants a close examination of data relating to deaths in Ireland  as compiled by the CSO, the OECD, HIQA and studies by both Maynooth and Limerick Universities.

Deputy McGrath says an independent expert to chair the inquiry, ensuring transparency through publicly available hearings and meetings, is required to establish the facts and provide guiding principles for any future event.
