Orla O’Dwyer, Rosegreen, a former member of Boherlahan and Tipperary GAA teams, is celebrating after winning the Australian Football League Women’s Grand final with her team Brisbane Lions. Orla now becomes only the 2nd Irish player to win Multiple AFLW Premiership titles. Orla scored the third quarter goal that gave her team the lead in their victory over Melbourne on a final score of 44 – 27 in favour of Brisbane.
Dublin’s Jennifer Dunne played alongside Orla and becomes the first Irish Player to win an AFLW Premiership and All Ireland in the same year.
Tipperary’s Niamh Martin was a member of the losing Melbourne squad in the final.
In the end of season honours Tipperary’s Aishling Moloney has won the Best First Year Player. The 25 year old excelled through her debut season with Geelong Cats kicking 10 goals in 13 games.
The Irish success augurs well for future opportunities for Irish players to join the AFLW now in it’s 8th season.
