A history of the Tipperary Workhouse is to be launched on October 19th. The extensive history, in 25 chapters, features stories relating to 19 local areas surrounding Tipperary town.
The book was written by Tipp town man Gay Lowry and covers the Workhouse Union Building (1841 – 1924), the operation of St Vincent’s Hospital and also includes stories about the Glove and Lino factories that operated at various times from the Workhouse building located on Station Road in Tipperary town.
The building is currently vacant after plans for the development of tourist hostel accommodation in the building ended in disarray in 2010.
The book will be launched at the Tipperary Excel Centre on Thursday October 19th by Dr Des Marnane.
Books will be available to purchase on the night – the event will commence at 7.30pm.
