CCTV footage has enabled Gardaí to identify a person in an investigation into a fire at the Source Arts Centre in Thurles. A teenage girl has been identified and cautioned by Gardaí for her actions in causing the fire.
The fire occurred on September 22nd leading to the cancellation of the Culture Night events at the centre. The building was evacuated as the fire was discovered by staff members in the underground car-park on the afternoon of Friday the 22nd of September. The fire caused damage to the air conditioning system and some electrical wiring before it was extinguished by the Thurles unit of the Tipperary Fire Service. Repairs are expected to cost €5,300.
The person identified as being responsible for the fire is being dealt with by the Juvenile Diversion System. The teenage female will be cautioned and placed under the supervision of the local Juvenile Liaison officer. The incident will not result in a criminal record for the teenager.
The fire caused alarm and concern for the possible loss of the community facility that includes the Source Arts Centre, Auditorium, Gallery, Community Rooms, Thurles Library and the extensive archive of Tipperary history in the Tipperary Studies unit on the top floor of the building.
