Plans for an expansion of bedroom capacity at the Cashel Palace Hotel have been declared withdrawn by Tipperary County Council Planning Authority.

The proposal included the construction of 28 hotel bedrooms in two blocks, each of one and a half storeys at Moor lane Cashel. The planning application also included the demolition of an existing hayshed and the provision of a new opening in a boundary wall for emergency access.

The project attracted a number of submissions that objected to the development submitted on behalf of Marymount Assets Ltd – a company registered in the Virgin Islands.  The Department of Heritage advised Tipperary County Council to refuse permission earlier this year in it’s submission.   The Department raised a number of “heritage related concerns” and also considered that the development would be in breach of the Tipperary County Development Plan (2022 -2028)and the Cashel & Environs Development Plan(2009 -2015).

The Department also expressed concerns in it’s submission that the proposed building would be “visually intrusive and negatively impact on the shared cultural landscape” in the area between the Rock of Cashel and the Cashel Palace Hotel (formerly The Bishop’s Palace). Further concerns were expressed by the Department that the project might damage the chances of securing UNESCO World Heritage site status for the Royal Sites of Ireland of which the Rock of Cashel is a component part. The developer had been asked to submit further information on the proposal in December 2022.  The Council says that the application was declared withdrawn as of September 27th as the time frame for the submission of the further information had expired.  The planning reference for the application on the Tipperary County Council planning system is 2260575.
