In a message to the International Day of Peace Ceremony in Tipperary Town, the Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar says that the Government is committed to strengthening the ideals of peace, at a time of complex global challenges. Mr. Varadkar says that we have regrettably seen the return of war to Europe referring to the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the use of energy, food, and migration in an attempt to weaken the resolve of the international community. The Taoiseach commended the work of Tipperary Peace Convention on their valuable work.
President Michael D. Higgins also commended the work of the Tipperary Peace Convention. In a message to the ceremony the President says “For almost 40 years now, all those who have been involved with the Tipperary Peace Convention have been engaged in an admirable programme of work, in promotion and celebration of peace. Peace is the cornerstone upon which we can build a more just, equitable, and sustainable world.”
President Higgins expresses deep gratitude to the Tipperary Peace Convention for it’s tireless efforts, hard work and dedication in promoting and celebrating peace. The convention held a Special Ecumenical service at St Mary’s Church, Tipperary town earlier today to mark International day of Peace. September 21st is designated as such by the United Nations.
The Tipperary Peace Convention presents an annual award to honour the work of individuals or groups in promoting or maintaining peace. The 2023 Award was presented to the Belarusian human rights activist and politician Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya.
