Councillors in the Tipperary Cahir Cashel District have referred the issue of additional facilities for camper vans in the towns of Tipperary, Cashel and Cahir to the Community and Enterprise section of the Council for further examination.

The decision follows discussion of a motion from Councillor Anne Marie Ryan calling on the Municipal District office to identify suitable locations for a public campervan park in each of the District’s towns and to deliver on this service in the near future.

The Councillor says the motivation is to bring visitors to the towns to help support the local economy as the closest camper park to Tipperary town is 11km away.

The Council Executive issued a response in advance of the meeting that 7 privately run, caravan and camping parks operate in the county with 5 of these located within Tipperary Cahir Cashel Municipal District.

The Executive position is that such facilities are better equipped and operate in accordance with a grant of planning permission.

The Executive response also raised concerns that the designation of short term parking spaces in towns, without adequate facilitates could give rise to nuisance and noise issues.

In addition, some Councillors expressed the concern that the Council would be competing with private business operators.

Clonmel Borough is now operating 12 spaces for Campervans in the Suir Island Car Park, Clonmel, charging a fee of €10 per night payable on the Parking Pay & Display Machine.
