The Community of Knockavilla is to host the AGM of Tipperary County Council today. Councillors and members of the Tipperary Executive are expected to attend a special Mass at 10.15 in Knockavilla Church before assembling in the Community Centre for the formal AGM meeting. The Mass will be offered for deceased members of Tipperary County Council. Council staff were preparing the venue yesterday in advance of today’s meeting. The Community Centre is located in the former national school, first opened in 1894.
The location for the meeting was requested by outgoing Cathaoirleach Roger Kennedy, a native of Knockavilla. Mr Kennedy now lives in Boherlahan and says he has enjoyed his year as Cathaoirleach attending over 200 events locally and nationally. Pressed for a highlight, Cllr Kennedy says the completion of the contract for the €44M Killaloe Bypass, Shannon Bridge Crossing and R494 (Birdhill) upgrade is a major achievement for the county.
The role of Cathaoirleach is expected to be filled by FG Councillor Ger Darcy from Ardcroney with the Leas Cathaoirleach position going to FF councillor Seamus Hanafin from Thurles. The Government parties control 21 of the 40 seats on the Council and operate a voting pact on such decisions.
