Homeless figures have risen again for the month of May to a new record high, according to the Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage Darragh O’Brien.
In county Tipperary there are 51 people classified as homeless and supported in emergency accommodation. The figure was 53 in April so a slight improvement is reported. 336 people are in emergency accommodation in county Limerick in May, the same figure as for April 2023.
Mr O’Brien says the pace of increase in the number of homeless people is reducing but described today’s figures as disappointing. There are now 12,441 people in emergency accommodation including 3,699 children. The figure for April 2023 was 12,259.
The Housing Minister says the slower pace at which people are becoming homeless is no consolation to those who find themselves in emergency accommodation. The Minister also says the figures show that the predictions of a tsunami of homelessness following the lifting of the eviction ban has not happened because of the measures the Government introduced. Not all of the Notices to Quit have fallen due at this time.
