Tipperary TD Alan Kelly is calling for tighter regulation of hotel room pricing especially in Dublin. At a sitting of the Public Accounts Committee there were accusations that the hotel industry is “price-gouging”. Deputy Kelly says pricing in Dublin is a national disgrace and an embarrassment to Ireland.
Government Ministers are to meet hotel operators next week to address the high cost of rooms. Katherine Licken, Secretary General at the Department of Tourism, says the Government is “acutely aware of the issue which will be addressed in next week’s meeting. The Department considers the high prices as a reputational issue for Ireland as Tourism Ireland tries to promote Ireland “as a value for money destination”.
