UL Approved To Continue Application To Host New School Veterinary Medicine

The University of Limerick has been approved to continue with it’s application to be the host for new Irish School of Veterinary Medicine.

Deputy Michael Lowry has welcomed the decision which is not confirmation that the UL bid will be successful but is a very positive indicator of future success.

The Higher Education Authority says that the University of Limerick has a ‘viable proposal to deliver veterinary education’ and it is understood that the UL proposal included provision for 90 student veterinary places.

At present the existing 82 places on UCD’s Veterinary Course is totally inadequate to meet demand. Irish students have been travelling to Poland and Bulgaria to undertake their studies in Veterinary Medicine.

Deputy Lowry says the increase in spaces will be a support to existing veterinary practices and help support the Agriculture and Equestrian sectors of the economy.
