Thurles Municipal District has a new Cathaoirleach after today’s AGM. Fianna Fáil Councillor Sean Ryan is taking over from Fine Gael Councillor Peggy Ryan. The Councillor, who teaches in Rockwell College was nominated by party colleagues Cllr Michael Smith and Cllr Seamus Hanafin. The post of Leas Cathaoirleach is to be filled by Team Lowry Councillor Shane Lee from Roscrea.
Cllr Ryan said he was honoured to be elected. Tipperary County Council Chief Executive Joe MacGrath congratulated Cllr Ryan and wished him well in the coming year which leads into the Local Elections in 2024. Tributes were paid to Cllr Peggy Ryan, the first woman to hold the position since the Municipal District Councils were first established in 2014. The Tipperary Cahir Cashel AGM is to be held on June 26th with Fine Gael Councillor Declan Burgess tipped to take over from Fianna Fail’s Cllr Micheal Anglim. The two Government parties hold 21 of the 40 seats on Tipperary County Council and have operated a voting pact in recent years.
