Local Group Suffers Due To Lack Of Insurance Cover

Local communities are suffering due to the lack of insurance cover for events.

The latest to suffer is Faugheen in south Tipperary. The Faugheen 50 Motorbike road race has been deferred until next year due to a lack of insurance cover.

The National body, Motorcycling Ireland sought to get insurance elsewhere for the event but without success. Several other clubs nationwide have had to cancel events.

The Faugheen event was a major attraction in bringing up to 80 or 90 riders to the village in the run-up to the July event to participate in qualifying and then numerous races, with over 5,000 fans expected.

The loss of revenue for the local hospitality sector is significant in addition to the loss of a social occasion in the village.

The Government has promised reform and expansion of the insurance sector over several years and says work is ongoing to attract more insurance companies into the Irish market.
