Six biodiversity projects in the county have secured funding under the Local Biodiversity Action Fund – almost €69,000 is granted to the Tipperary projects out of a national allocation of €2.7M announced today by Heritage Minister Malcolm Noonan.
Phase 3 of the Wetland Survey in the county is allocated €26,000, Tipperary Biodiversity Awareness programme receives €17,000, the Lough Nahinch Enhancement project is allocated €12,000. Tipperary Monitoring of the Alpine newt population is granted €4,810 while the Tipperary Birds Survey in Schohoboy Bog/Sopwell Woodlands, Nahinch Bog and Lake and Knocknaree Woodlands receives €4,500 and finally the Tipperary River Shannon Quagga Mussel project is granted €4,120.
A separate grant is awarded to the recording of Dragonflies and Damselflies in County Tipperary. The Small Recording Grant scheme, managed by the NPWS, aims to help established naturalists to maintain and enhance their expertise in species identification, and to develop the next generation of natural history recorders.
County Tipperary County Council is to appoint a fulltime Biodiversity officer in the coming weeks as the State steps up it’s response to the Biodiversity crisis.
