Tipperary County Council is welcoming the faster development of a new Garda Station for Clonmel following the announcement that approval has been granted to proceed with the development of new Garda Stations in Clonmel and Macroom through direct exchequer funding. The new station had been intended to be delivered as part of a Public Private Partnership which caused significant delays as the third part of the project – a new Family Court Complex in Dublin is not yet ready to proceed.
The new 3,630 sq. m building on a site of circa 0.46 hectares will be located at the site of the former Kickham Barracks. The existing Garda Station, on Emmet Street is said to be no longer fit for purpose.
Cathaoirleach of Tipperary County Council, Cllr Roger Kennedy says the faster delivery is welcome and that the new station will be a welcome addition to the recently completed Civic Plaza at Kickham Barracks.
The Council’s vision for the town – “Clonmel 2030 – Transformational Regeneration” is intended to transform the town centre into a space that would meet, accommodate and grow with the changing needs of its 21st century population. The purpose of all the combined projects is to lead to an increase in footfall, spend and activity within the town centre. Part of the Kickham Barracks regeneration includes the development of a new Garda Station fronting onto the newly developed Civic Plaza.
The Office of Public Works will now progress the first stage of the two projects and form a design team to complete detailed design and preparation of tender documentation. Tender issue is expected late this year or early next year with works to commence on site in 2024.
