An event to commemorate the 49th anniversary of the Dublin and Monaghan bombings will take place today. Two people from Tipperary died as a result of the bombings. In Dublin three car bombs exploded, almost simultaneously at approximately 5.30pm, in Parnell Street, Talbot Street, and South Leinster Street. Another car bomb exploded at approximately 7.00pm in North Road, Monaghan in total 33 people and an unborn child died in the atrocities. The bombings were carried out by loyalist paramilitaries.
A wreath will be laid at the Memorial on Talbot Street and the Tánaiste Micheál Martin, Lord Mayor of Dublin Caroline Conroy and Cathaoirleach of Monaghan County Council Seán Conlon will address the audience. The annual oration will be delivered by journalist Vincent Browne. The commemoration event has been organised by Justice for the Forgotten.
The two victims from Tipperary were Maureen Shields originally from Hollyford. Maureen moved to Dublin where she worked in the civil service until her marriage in 1953. Maureen was killed in the Talbot Street explosion. The second victim from Tipperary was Breda Turner originally from Thurles. Breda worked in the civil service, in the income tax office. She was engaged to be married the following Easter. She was killed in the Parnell Street explosion.
