Women interested in getting involved in public representation are invited to a seminar to be held on Thursday morning in Thurles. The event is being hosted by Tipperary Women’s Caucus and Tipperary County Council in association with See Her Elected – an organisation working to increase female participation in politics. See Her Elected also offers training and advice to women interested in participating in elections for local, national and European level. Thursdays event will include panel discussions with local politicians as well as an address from keynote speaker Public Affairs Consultant, Kathleen O’ Meara.
The event will include informal panel discussions with 7 of Tipperary’s 9 female councillors on their journey into politics and the day-to-day reality of being public representatives.
Dr Michelle Maher, Programme Manager with See Her Elected, the award-winning Government funded project which supports women in rural constituencies to become county councillors will also speak about the work of the organisation in providing a pathway for women into local government. Only 26% of county councillors throughout Ireland are female and there is a much lower percentage of female councillors in rural counties compared to more urban centres around Dublin. There are only 9 female councillors out of 40 in County Tipperary which is just 23% – women make up slightly more than 50% of the population.
Entry to the seminar is free of charge – places can be booked on the Eventbrite platform with the link on www.tipperarycoco.ie or www.seeherelected.ie or by emailing [email protected]
