Two units of Tipperary Fire Service (Tipperary town and Cashel) responded to reports of a fire at the former Workhouse building on Station Road in Tipperary town on Monday evening at approximately 8.30pm.
The fire has been dealt with and no injuries are reported.
The cause of the fire is unknown at this stage but may have been deliberate or accidental – there is currently no power supply to the building which has been damaged by vandalism and neglect in recent years.
The fire was on the upper floor and involved waste material on the floor.
Personnel from Tipperary Fire Service report that the flooring in the building is unsafe at present.
The property is owned by Tipperary County Council and the Council are currently engaged in a process to bring the site into use.
A project to convert the building into a tourism hostel ended in turmoil in 2010 after millions of euros were invested and only a fraction of the building had been refurbished as intended.
Neighbours say there have been people in the building late at night in recent months – possibly sleeping in the property.
