Tipperary Town Enhancement Group is to submit a proposal for an upgrade of the area around the Maid of Erin and the monument itself.
The group, which includes Chairman Eamon Ryan, Eilish Fitzgerald, William Kinnane and William Carroll, are working with Tipperary Tidy Towns, The Revitalisation Task Force and Tipperary Council on the project.
Upgrades may include removing the railing outside the monument situated on Main Street at the Junction with Church Street. New signage, flower beds and seating is also proposed. The group say the project is with the Task Force office at present and once a design is completed it will be published – funding will also have to be sought for the works. The monument features a female form on top of the plinth that bears the images of three Irish men executed in England in 1867. The three men known as the Manchester Martyrs are William Allen, Michael Larkin and Michael O’Brien. William Allen was a native of Tipperary town.
The memorial was relocated to this space from the Main Street/O’Brien Street/Church street junction to protect it from damage due to possibility of being struck by a vehicle.
